The TTC has become an integral part of the daily commute for many GTA residents. Have you ever wondered about the history behind the subway system?

The first subway was an idea created in London by Charles Pearson. The underground railway opened in London in 1863 but did not become electrified until 1890. It didn’t take long for the concept to reach America as five years later Boston began the construction of their own subway system which was 2.4km and was completed in 1897.

It took a while for the subway to be introduced here in Canada. Canada's first subway was introduced in 1954. This subway line was 7.4km long and ran parallel to and under Yonge street from Eglington Ave to Union Station. Next time you are on the subway, take some time to reflect on the past of this historic mode of transportation.
