Riding your bike is a great way to work out and improve your mental health. Have you thought about how your diet affects the quality of your bike ride?

As your body digests the food you eat, the stomach and small intestine absorb glucose from food into the bloodstream. It is then used by the body as energy. Therefore by eating healthy, you're preparing your body for the physical exertion of the bike ride. By eating well you will be capable of exhibiting increased levels of endurance and you will enjoy your bike ride more.

Many people across North America do not eat healthily. They cite many reasons for this. Look below for the most common barriers to healthy eating and tips on how to overcome them.

Too expensive: If you find the price of a good diet to be daunting, you may want to practice buying non-brand name items, buying what's in season, buying frozen fruits and vegetables, and starting your own herb garden at home!

Not enough time: A helpful tip for the busy people out there is to meal prep your food for the week ahead of time. This will make eating healthy easier as instead of having to create your meal from scratch, you can choose from a multitude of meals you have pre-made for yourself.

Doesn't taste good: If you dislike the taste of healthy foods, we suggest you try and substitute your current foods with healthier options. This may look like switching your chocolate chip muffin to a whole grain carrot muffin, using almond flower instead of white flower or having yogurt popsicles instead of ice cream!

Consuming protein is a great way to fuel your body. Check out these high-protein foods for your next meal/snack:

  • Banana
  • Oatmeal
  • Beans
  • Lentils
  • Chicken
  • Yogurt and Granola

Make note of how much more energized and capable you feel during your bike ride!
