What Makes a Great Shoe

The best walk to work is done in well-fitted shoes. Having a properly fitted shoe allows you to walk longer distances, improves your posture, and increases balance, and you will not have the negative long-term effect improper footwear has on the body.

The upper is an area located above the sole of the shoe. A properly fitting upper should have no binding, chafing or bunching allowing it to lay smoothly.

The ankle collar is located at the top of the shoe and keeps the heel in place. Make note of if you feel the collar pressing tightly onto your bones, if it's uncomfortable on your Achilles tendon or if your heel slips out of the shoe when you walk. If these things occur, it is a sign the shoe does not fit you properly.

The heel counter is a tough material that supports and holds your heel. The purpose of the heel counter is to increase your balance. A good-fitting heel counter isn’t limiting ankle motion.

The saddle of the shoe is located between the ball and ankle of the shoe and is the part which holds the laces. The saddle should mold smoothly to your foot shape and prevent it from slipping.

The toe box is located at the toe of the shoe. They often will come equipped with reinforced material or a bumper that protects your foot if you were to stub your toes. A properly fitting toe box should allow your toes to spread and wiggle. Your foot should be able to flex without any discomfort.

The outsole is the bottom surface of the shoe that interacts with the road. It should not make the shoe heavy or prevent mobility. It should instead provide traction and prevent slip.
