Getting Started

Taking transit allows you to save money, eliminates the stress of driving through congested peak hours, and has many positive impacts to the environment, such as reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. Below are some best practices on taking transit:

  1. Know where you're going: Have your route planned out ahead of time so you can pay attention to your surroundings. The Trip Planner app is a free online tool that integrates GOVA Transit routes and schedules into Google Maps. It will show you how to get to your nearest bus stop, which bus to take to get where you want to go, and how long it will take. The MyBus app shows how long until the arrival of the next bus at your stop, based on real time bus GPS information.
  2. Check the time: The worst thing that can happen to a commuter is missing their ride because of poor time management. Make sure you know your closest bus stop and its stop schedule. If you’re transferring, make note of the timing for your second bus and coordinate the best route for you.
  3. Transit fares: Have your exact fare or GOVA transit pass card ready before you board, so you aren't fumbling with your wallet or purse and risk exposing your money. Bus operators do not carry change. For a full list of fares and bus pass options, visit our GOVA Fares page.
  4. Next stop: Listen or watch for your stop shown on the digital displays near the front of the bus showing the next stop(s). Signal your request to get off at the next stop well in advance by pressing the stop button on the handlebar or pulling the string along the passenger seat windows.

Bikes and Transit

Combining transit and cycling can help you get to your destination faster and is a greater option for longer trips. All GOVA Transit buses are equipped with bike racks to transport your bike for free. For more information on bike rack rules and usage, visit the City of Greater Sudbury's Bike Racks web page.
