Spring Into Cycling Photo Contest 2022

By Jennifer Huang

May 8, 2022

In light of the warm weather outside, more and more people have come out of winter hibernation mode to enjoy the many outdoor activities spring has to offer, including cycling. In that spirit, we held a photo contest from May 16 - May 31, 2022 where we invited the residents of Markham and Richmond Hill to share with us their bike rides while running errands, commuting to and from work, and for leisure. The contest prizes included four $25 e-gift cards and winners were chosen through a random draw.

We received submissions from various cycling enthusiasts who biked with friends and family and utilized cycling infrastructure in the York Region including bike trails, bike boxes, and multi-use paths! The four lucky winners shared their bike stories with us, as well as tips for other inspiring cyclists.

Since April 2022, I began biking to work when weather permits. It gives me an opportunity to exercise and helps me maintain my fitness. I feel refreshed to start my work in the office after my bike ride.

As a child, I missed the boat on learning to ride a bike. As an adult, it was a goal of mine to learn to ride, which I finally did in my 20s. I've been getting more confident with my husband's help and I'm happy to say that I commuted to work along the Highway 7 bike lanes for the first time. It felt great knowing that I had a greener, cheaper way to travel as well as being able to get exercise in!

Before going out on the bike, whether it is a century ride (100+ km), or just a ride to the corner store, I always do the ABCH safety check:

  • A (Air): check the air in the tires before riding. It is dangerous if the tires are over or under inflated;
  • B1 (Brake): check the brakes, both front and rear, to ensure that the bike can be stopped safely;
  • B2 (Bell): Make sure the bell is in good working condition. Ring the bell to alert other cyclists, pedestrians and cars;
  • C (Chain and Crane): clean and lubricate the chain and crane regularly to ensure the bike moves smoothly.
  • H (Helmet): Helmets are mandatory for children under the age of 18. I always wear a helmet for protection, as you never know when an accident could happen. Also, check the expiry date of the helmet, which is usually 10 years.

    In addition, bring water to avoid dehydration, especially during the hot weather.

    I decided to try cycling the Yonge St bike lanes and the Highway 7 multi-use path for the first time. The Yonge St bike lanes were easy to access by using the left-turn bike box, which provided a waiting zone, indicating to drivers that I was preparing to cross the intersection. The Highway 7 multi-use path is a smooth and comfortable route, and very convenient for accessing the Richmond Hill Centre Terminal or continuing a cycling trip along Highway 7.
