Smart Commute Awards

The Awards were introduced in 2007 to officially recognize employer members or partners who have put forth exceptional effort in implementing their Smart Commute programs. The awards recognize outstanding commitment, leadership, innovation and results.

Smart Commutes from across the GTAH nominated their top employers and one award will be given for Smart Commutes in Hamilton, Halton, Mississauga, Brampton-Caledon, North Toronto and Vaughan, Northeast Toronto, 404-7 (Markham and Richmond Hill), Toronto-Central, Central York (Newmarket and Aurora) and Durham.

Geography Awareness Week Transportation Day

Transportation Day was November 15th, 2007 and Smart Commute was pleased to join the Canadian Association of Geographers in highlighting the connections between Geography and transportation during Geography Awareness Week (November 12-16, 2007).

Many residents of metropolitan areas are affected by geography and transportation every single day.  The daily commute is a prime example of how Geography (the study of the Earth, humans and the interconnections between them) can inform our transportation choices and have an impact on the way we live.  Travel to and from work is not only determined by the physical and social environment (e.g. distance, economy and communication networks) but also has varying impacts on the environment through the resulting use of resources, impacts on long-term climate and air quality and influence on the pattern of development in our urban regions.

Recognizing the importan links between transportation, economy and the environment, Smart Commute works with local employers and commuters to explore different commuter choices like carpooling, teleworking, transit, cycling, walking or flexible work hours.  Our goal is to help make commuting easier, healthier and more enjoyable.

Click here to learn more about us.  Also check out the Success Stories and Resources sections of our web site and visit the Carpool Zone, a sophisticated, map-based carpool matching system.

Smart Commute is also supporting research in geography.  Click here to learn more.

World Record Walk

World Record Walk logo

The World Record Walk took place across Ontario and in other regions of Canada simultaneously at 12:30 EDT on October 3rd, 2007.

More than 1,000 employees of Smart Commute member and partner workplaces took part in the walk!  Along with close to 3,000 other events hapening at the same time across the country, we hope to break the current record of 100,915 participants held by Western Autralia.

Preliminary results can be viewed at www.worldrecordwalk.ca.

Smart Commute joined with Green Communities Canada to get workplaces in the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton involved in the World Record Walk.  Smart Commute promotes walking as a cost effective and healthy way to commute to work.  Visit the "Choose you Way" section of our web site for tips and information on walking: http://www.smartcommute.ca/choose/walk.

The World Record Walk was organized by Green Communities Canada  (www.greencommunitiescanada.ca), a national association of community-based non-profit organizations that deliver innovative environmental programs and services, with a focus on household and community action. Green Communities Canada supports member organizations in working together to achieve environmental sustainability, including healthy ecosystems and communities, sustainable resource use, and clean air, water, and soil.

Carpool Week - September 17-21, 2007

Goodyear

Carpool Zone

Smart Commute and Goodyear have teamed up to bring you Carpool Week in the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton.

Did you know that just 17% of Ontario commuters carpool?  Carpool Week is a great time to find some friends and share the ride.  To find your carpool partner, check out the Carpool Zone.

Eighty-one percent of carpoolers are concerned about the state of the vehicle they're riding in.  To help make your carpool safer - and more fuel-efficient - check out these great tips from Goodyear.

York University Research Project

York University and Smart Commute have teamed together to investigate the cumulative impact of stress in the driving environment, and to identify factors that help to reduce driver stress levels. The study will determine if social support offered by members of a carpooling group can help to reduce driver stress, and will also examine the stress experienced by carpool passengers. Participants in the study will be sought through Smart Commute’s online ridematching service, the Carpool Zone. Research will be undertaken by doctoral candidate Christine Wickens under the supervision of Dr. David L. Wiesenthal.

University of Toronto at Mississauga Research Project

Smart Commute has partnered with a research team at the University of Toronto at Mississauga to explore carpooling behaviour within the Greater Toronto Area. Under the supervision of Professor Ron Buliung, undergraduate Geography student Kalina Soltys is conducting a detailed analysis of a recent Smart Commute Carpool Zone satisfaction survey. The primary goal of the research is to advance current understanding around the role of information and communication technologies (ICT) in facilitating transitions to alternative transport options. Results from this study will provide insight into the effectiveness of Smart Commute’s web-based Carpool Zone as an approach to easing the process of carpool formation. Moreover, respondent feedback around their use of the Carpool Zone software will provide important information to guide future Smart Commute programming and software development initiatives.
